Adenosine/Dobutamine Myocardial Perfusion Scan (Without Exercise)

Infusion of the medication Adenosine/Persantine to induce cardiovascular “stress” in conjunction with the imaging of the heart muscle is a safe and effective method for the diagnosis and evaluation of coronary artery disease and cardiac function.

How to Prepare:

  1. Please wear loose fitting clothes without metal buttons/zippers.

  2. Please do not eat or drink four hours before your appointment. No Caffeine (coffee, tea, cola’s, chocolate, and/or decaffeinated beverages of any kind) should be consumed from 6 p.m. the night before your appointment.

  3. If you are taking any medications please contact the office to determine if there should be any changes to these medications on the day of your test.

  4. An IV (Intravenous) line will be started in your arm and an injection of the imaging radioisotope (Cardiolite) will be administered. There will be a 60-minute wait before the images are obtained. During this period you may leave the office and have a light, non-fat meal.

  5. Upon return you will have the resting images taken. This will take approximately 20 minutes.

  6. The Pharmacologic agent will then be administered by a physician and registered nurse and you will be continually monitored during the process. At peak administration of the Adenosine/Dobutamine, a second injection of Cardiolite will be given through the IV.

  7. A second set of images will then be taken approximately 60-75 minutes after this second administration. These images will take approximately 15 minutes.

  8. You should expect to spend three to four hours before concluding the exam.
